Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center (DSC) offers compassionate treatment for people coming off drugs, alcohol or other substances. David P. Hooper, our center’s namesake, was a talented track star and aspiring politician. He also struggled with alcohol use. Hooper died in the Portland city jail in the early 1970s, when Oregon still defined alcohol addiction as a crime, not a disease. Our building bears his name as a reminder that there’s a better way to care for people struggling with substance use and addiction. 

Today, Hooper DSC serves over 3,000 people a year in a safe, inclusive space. Many of our staff are in recovery themselves and have experienced the challenges of withdrawal and early stabilization. They serve as reminders that recovery is possible, and often provide the first rays of hope for the journey ahead.

• 24-hour nursing support

• Coordinated planning for transitions to outpatient treatment, residential care, mental health services, primary care, supportive/ substance-free housing, or returning home

• Withdrawal treatment for alcohol and other substances

How to Access Care

You can walk into Hooper by 7:30 am, Monday – Friday for our morning triage. 

Hooper is closed on Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Most people stay from three to eight days. We provide all your basic needs, including meals, clothes, shoes, hygiene kits, towels, and bedding.

• Insurance verification (if applicable)

• A 10-day supply of any medications you are taking, including insulin and inhalers, in the original packaging (required)

• Your own T-shirts, socks, undergarments, books and journals (optional)

• Controlled substances such as Lyrica (pregabalin), Ativan (lorazepam), Ambien (zolpidem), Adderall (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine), oxycodone, methadone, or your own Suboxone (buprenorphine). If you bring these items, we will require someone to pick them up before the end of the business day, or we must destroy them.

• Personal cellphones (phones are provided for use in the dorms)

• Jackets and hoodies are not allowed in the milieu
